A Few Of My Favorite Things : Salads in Mumbai Part 1

When one earlier thought of salads in Mumbai the image of cut cucumber, carrots and tomatoes limpid on a plate came to mind almost as a sad accompaniment to one's meal.Or it was eaten if the doctor thought you needed to shed some pounds almost as a punishment. But in the last ten years Mumbaikars have developed a love for this dish and people choose to have it even though they are not on a diet. The following are my top three Salad choices in Mumbai that I would pick over a main course or even french fries (a true mark of how good a dish has to be)

THE WATERMELON AND FETA SALAD @ THE TASTING ROOM

T
Chunks of watermelon on a bed of deep green rocket leaves generously sprinkled with salty feta cheese. All drizzled with a balsamic vinaigrette and toasted pinenuts. Sigh

ORANGE AND WALNUT SALAD @SMOKE DELI CAFE

Ordinarily I would have never chosen to order this salad but the waiter recommended it so highly that decided to take a chance on it. Its a mix of assorted green, dotted with cubes of marinated goats cheese, caramelized walnuts with generous shards of fresh oranges with an orangy vinigrette. The sweetness of the dressing  and caramelized walnuts with the tartness of the actual orange segments and the neutral leaves offsets the creamy goat cheese. A fiesta for your pallate and eyes...its like summer on a plate.

ROASTED MEDITERRANEN VEGETABLE @INDIGO DELI

This is different from the other two salads as this a partially cooked salad. Oven Roasted mushrooms, asparagus, peppers and broccoli are tossed with fresh light greens, palm hearts and buffalo mozzerela cheese with a pesto oil dressing to form this surprisingly yum salad that I can eat anytime instead of dinner.
